The Most Rev. James F. Checchio was named the Bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen by Pope Francis on March 8, 2016.
He was installed as the Fifth Bishop of Metuchen
on May 3, 2016.
|
For his episcopal motto, Bishop Checchio was inspired by the writings of Saint Paul, the Patron Saint of Cursillo
(2 Corinthians 5:20). In a letter published
in The Catholic Spirit on May 26, 2016, he wrote,
"Be
reconciled to God" will be my motto and guide my episcopal
ministry amongst you. This motto is inspired by the writings of St. Paul,
who urges us always to be reconciled to God, and then to become
ambassadors for Him in reconciling others to God our Father. The
whole reason God sent His Son to us was to lead us back to the
Father; and this reconciling is the one true route to grace-filled
and peaceful hearts and lives, resting in God now and hopefully
forever in heaven. |
Bishop Checchio inspires and encourages the Cursillistas in the Diocese of
Metuchen through his prayers and support. In October 2017, he wrote the
following Palanca letter for participants of the Cursillo weekend:
I extend my prayerful best wishes to you as you embark on your
Cursillo encounter weekend. This is a special year for you – the
sixtieth anniversary of the Cursillo movement in the United States
and the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of your founder,
Eduardo Bonnin Aguilo! What a blessing to have all of you so
committed to bringing our communities in the Diocese of Metuchen
to experience the grace and love of God. Your witness to growing
in your own faith and leading others to a deeper relationship with
Jesus Christ inspires me in my own faith life and ministry…
On
behalf of the entire church in Metuchen, know of my prayers and
support as you encounter Our Risen Lord in the varied
opportunities this weekend will offer you. Thank you for all your
prayers for me and all the good you continue to do. May Our Lady
of Guadalupe and
Saint Paul
the Apostle continue to intercede for the Cursillo Movement
throughout our country and especially in the vineyard of the Lord
in northern New Jersey. De Colores!
